ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Curro Vargas is an opera drama in three acts with music by Ruperto Chapí and a libretto by Joaquín Dicenta Paso and Antonio Paso y Cano, based on the novel El niño de la bola (The child with the ball) by Pedro Antonio de Alarcón. It premiered on 10 December 1898 at Teatro Circo Parish in Madrid.
It is difficult to classify this work between an operetta and opera. While it has some spoken parts, there are much more musical numbers and the script contains few comic moments which are so typical in operettas. The same applies to the musical numbers, romances or concertantes which are a bigger part of standard opera pieces than in operettas.
