ON THIS PERFORMANCE
The Grand Duchess of Gerolstein (original title in French, La Grande-Duchesse de Gérolstein) is an Opéra Bouffe (a type of operetta) in three acts with music by Jacques Offenbach and French libretto by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy. The story is a satirical critique of the reckless militarism just three years before the Franco-Prussian War, and was later banned. Its main character is a young and tyrannical grand duchess who learns that you can’t always get away with everything.
